Folded Up: Internal Kitchen Reconfiguration and Outrigger Extension
The existing pair of semi-detached houses feature catslide roofs and a U-shaped footprint at the rear. The kitchen roof was sloping down to a very low eaves height, closing the space off from the garden and sunlight with only a small door accessing the side alley. The area was overall far too small for a five bedroom house, especially in relation to the generous front and rear reception rooms.
We have ‘redirected’ the roof slope, lifted and folded it up to open towards the surrounding patio / garden and to address the incoming sunlight. Large corner sliding doors emphasize the gesture and allow a fully openable, everyday eating area enjoying garden access and views.
The space has been reconfigured internally to accommodate a downstairs WC and a large utility space with extra butler sink, worktop and garden access. The kitchen offers generous storage, worktop, cooking and baking space around a large centre piece hob with built-in downdraft extractor.
The side return area has been redesigned and integrated with steps, planters and an external kitchen sculpted in black slate. There are external cupboards, a sink and tap, lighting and lots of worktop space next to the egg barbeque grill for the perfect summer party.
