Around The Tree: Garden Room and Patio
The reception rooms had just been converted for an elderly parent to move in and therefore the family of 5 was keen on additional living – working – social space, also to house the record player and at least part of the extensive record collection.
The room is positioned at the end of the long garden, under the trees, sharing its location with a young plum tree and a mature but much-loved apple tree.
The big fixed glass screen in a Cedar clad wall mirrors the existing rear extension of the main house in material and proportion.
Once the Cedar cladding weathers, the white washed cut-out will become even more distinct.
An L-shaped foot print features the recessed and protruding patio, which is partly covered by a continuation of the roof and partly built around the tree. Two big glass screens feature the view from the window seat, also used as a day bed and the built-in double desk towards the garden and sun, one more exposed and one more sheltered by the patio roof.
White washed floor boards are combined with ply-wood panelling and white painted timber beams and ceiling. The big fixed glass screens are juxtaposed with solid, timber-clad ventilation openings and the hidden entrance door. A serene and calm atmosphere makes this spot feel delightfully remote.
