Teenager & Artist Retreat: Garden Studio
The garden already features a generous artist studio, dug into the ground and positioned at the rear of the garden, facing the kitchen extension on the other end. In order to not be too overbearing the extra space needed to be less bulky and very specific. Minimal and focused on its functions the staggered volumes differentiate the areas inside and the garden zones outside.
The double bed niche catches the sunlight but is sheltered by the pear tree, the desk area pushes out into the garden, allowing views through and a double door opening onto the rear patio. The bathroom steps back and its full height glazing addresses the sky and the hedges.
It is a play between privacy and openness. Being very transparent in one direction allows the views from the main house to go through and still appreciate the overall dimension of the garden while at the same time blocking full direct views from the garden sitting area into the space.
The west and east sun is caught and filtered through.
It will now be changed into a 2nd studio space and occasional guest room for which the layout had been tested and the long walls and plywood cladding were designed to accommodate this as well.
