Blues & Light: Refurbishment of existing extensions
The existing side return extension of this L-shaped period property was done by previous owners 15 years ago and although offering the right space for the kitchen and dining area, was too dark as the rooflights were too small. The flat roof of the extension had resulted in a lowered opening of the rear reception room doors and therefore a dark music room, disconnected from the outside.
An original small, closed-off annex housed a cramped utility area with boiler and washing machine, forcing the kitchen wall run to stop short and being slightly wasteful in circulation space.
As the kitchen and all finishes needed replacing, the client decided to address the above issues as well. We opened up the roof and ‘replaced’ two of the three rooflights with much larger ones, spanning from flank wall to external wall. Especially the one in front of the reception room door was extended up to the walls, therefore allowing to raise the reception room doors again to their full, original height and letting lots of light in!
The rear main wall of the house was opened up and the slightly widened annex space integrated into the kitchen area. A rear window ‘outie’ became the focus point of the kitchen, channelling views into the lovely garden and providing a sunny seating area surrounded by greenery. Ceiling, floor and kitchen wall cupboards extend flush into the reconfigured space, while the kitchen focus moved further towards the garden and extra storage space was added towards the reception room wall.
A mahogany stained timber floor complements the playful variations on blue kitchen cupboards, combined with a brass splashback, sink and tap and a dark blue recycled paper worktop! A light and bright space with bold finishes.
