Neat and Bright: Side-Return and Rear Extension
The rear of this lovely 5 bedroom period property is facing a large brick side wall of an old, now converted factory building, which is a nice feature but also very prominent. The sunlight reaching the rear and side façade of the existing outrigger is therefore limited and the task was to catch the most of it. An existing rear extension housing the kitchen was blocking the dining table area from the small garden and the light completely.
We widened and raised all structural openings, completely replaced the rear extension and fully glazed the narrow side return. The table was to take centre stage, positioned under a generous rooflight and next to sliding doors opening at the corner. Neat concrete coloured tiles of a massive format provide a seamless and light floor reflecting the light. The kitchen ‘cockpit’ allows social cooking, cutting, preparing and a bar in the centre of the space.
A small cloakroom area sits in the transition between hall and kitchen, with a neat WC and coat cupboard. Oak worktop and shelves accurately echo the dining table and chairs, while a mirrored wall above the sink transports the garden deep into the space.
