Racing Green: Side-Return and Rear Extension
This 3 storey period property features 5 generous bedrooms and several bathrooms as well as bright and nicely proportioned front and rear reception rooms. As so often, the space which is used most and by the whole family together, the kitchen and dining room was a bit tight and the darkest area of the house.
The new design was developed around the dining table position at the garden end of the extended space and close to the generous glazing. The side return extension copies the length of the original outrigger in respect of the neighbour’s amenity and the rear extension follows the original width of the outrigger. The solid green glazed brick wall, which comprises a large fixed glass screen and timber seat negotiates (separates and connects) between the two extensions. It encourages a dining table position off-centre allowing a generous view and route through to the garden. At the same time the effect of the green glazed brick material, the glass facades to either side and the sun shining through the roof light brightening up the inside face evokes the feeling of sitting outside, playfully blurring the boundaries.
The side return roof is fully glazed with a hidden step down towards the neighbours and used for extra shelves and a desk space. The massive square island block in the middle of the kitchen surrounded by kitchen units, mainly the long run on the party wall featuring a generous sink area, full height units and sideboard space, extends its worktop as a bar under the long rooflight and addresses garden and dining table while cooking.
Before entering the kitchen a new cloakroom area with WC and coat-shoe-bag cupboard is installed as a neat continuation of the kitchen units, also integrating the double kitchen doors.
The warm, quiet but playful design includes white washed oak parquet flooring combined with the brick herringbone pattern of the patio. The oiled oak worktop, shelves, desk and seat complement the strong statement of the solid and shiny racing green wall element.
