Wrap-Around: Re-design and internal reconfiguration, guest room with ensuite, bathroom refurb.
This generous late 19th century residential property fills a very prominent corner plot in a quiet conservation area. The semi-detached house has two equally important main facades and addresses its own private garden to the front, hence offering a series of generous, light rooms with views over the road and into the park. However the kitchen was in comparison to the grand late-Victorian social spaces rather squeezed and as typical for the period tucked away to the ‘back’ as an ancillary space. The house had previously received a conservatory to the side in order to compensate for missing kitchen space and light and was split into main house and guest apartment.
The clients are dedicated cooks and enjoy generous delicious social gatherings with family and friends: therefore we perforated walls and re-considered the context and access of the existing spaces in order to give the dining table centre stage and to create a most inspiring back drop.
The long and narrow existing kitchen space now features a five meter long kitchen island spanning from the entrance point from the hall through to the conservatory and bar. It is organised in a very practical way where a lot of preparation space, tools and gadgets are sensibly arranged with an accessible hanging lighting and storage box over the island and a layer of full height colourful shelves along the wall. While the master chef enjoys the view to the garden, the lights from the conservatory, the link to the dining room, there is space for all friends to gather as well. In the end the doors will be closed and the mess is hidden away.
