Wohn-Landschaft: Side-Return & Rear Extension, Ground Floor Refurb, Basement Conversion, External Work
The semi-detached property is positioned on a very steep hill and while the rear features a beautiful newly landscaped terraced garden floating down the hill, the front hovers above the road with steep stairs and marvellous views. The sun & light streamed in through the big sashed windows at the front and hit the relatively closed side elevation and rear corner in the evening. The wide side return was shared with the attached property and quite shady. Kitchen and existing rear lean-to as well as the rear reception room were too small, disconnected and relatively dark.
The ground floor design combines the wish for an open plan layout, a lot of storage, the need for a proper dining table space close to the garden with light, views and stylish interiors.
A massive glass box houses a walnut finished bench allowing the long table to fit in the annex surrounded by patio and garden. The new party wall to the side return extension is stepped down to minimize its height for the neighbour and this step is concealed internally by the very long cupboard wall. The black storage wall continues through the house, the walnut lined cut-out shelf linking all spaces up to the front. The open plan ground floor spaces feature a light oak parquet throughout, supporting a coherent choice of charcoal surfaces with inlays of walnut lining, which are complemented by a large concrete worktop and pivoting door as well as nicely chosen lighting and furniture. The ground floor WC has been extended to include a utility space and the access to the kitchen re-routed. The effect of raising and widening the doors to the rear reception room allows experiencing the overall generous width of the house.
The existing basement storage space under the front reception room was transformed into a home cinema. Integrated ceiling screen, speakers and projector were designed in as well as a coordinated boiler and services space and a further storage wall.
The overall re-design included the front garden which features new long stairs in grey sandstone and bin and bike sheds with black slatted folding timber doors and green sedum roofs.
