Interlocked: Single storey, full width rear extension
The existing property is one of a pair of terraces which have been built to fill a site opened up by bomb damage between slightly bigger Victorian terraces. The client wished to build a ground floor rear extension to increase the kitchen and dining space area and introduce extra seating space as a 2nd lounge towards the garden in order to accommodate parents and teenagers alike.
Being dedicated vegetarians, good cooks and very skilled gardeners, the design focuses on a very usable family - cooking - eating – homework – space while featuring the beautiful garden.
The extension is stepped at the back to emphasize a playful interaction with the garden. The two grey interlocking shapes of the rear elevation translate this idea into the façade design. It creates a bright window seat space fully glazed to the rear and top, which is embedded and surrounded by flowers. This bright yellow sun-trap is big enough to be used for the teenagers’ game of chess, a coffee chat or afternoon snooze.
While the previous slightly deteriorated timber decking was raised above garden ground level, the new extension area is lowered and offers a dining / lounge space on patio / garden level with extra height creating further spaciousness. A purpose built Z-shaped timber furniture interlocks with the steps and supports a very space efficient layout; it functions as a bar stool to the kitchen island, offering a home work space next to the shelves in the chimney recess as well as being a bench, which allows the table to be positioned under the generous roof light and able to fit more people.
