Black Box Magic: Rear Extension & house refurbishment
Magic because the transformation of this house was quite astonishing. The new ground floor rear extension and all external structural works replaced a badly built add-on conservatory which was blocking of the already gloomy rear reception room and kitchen from the garden. The clients were in the process of buying the property and together we transformed it in record time for them, their toddler and new born baby to move in.
The 1940’s house is then end of the terrace offering a side access and crucial extra width of garden space. The massive exposed party wall of the adjacent period property showed his textured and 100 year old self and right in front of it was the ideal, protected and sunny spot for the garden loungers on the patio. The rear extension features a glass corner addressing the sunny patio area. A big chunky sliding door opens the whole ground floor to the flush patio. Integrated in the façade is a quick travel door from kitchen area to garden. The front reception room was kept as a possible separate living room with panelled, folding doors installed in a newly created opening for flexibility. A long island with bar, generous hob and a big chalkboard back panel offer fun for everyone. Money was wisely spent on some featured materials as for example the beautiful vintage oak parquet.
The upper floors were mainly just redecorated but a new bathroom design rearranges the former separate WC, bath and inefficient hall circulation space.
