Christoph and Esther
have founded Recort Architects in 1999 as a think-tank and a space for small scale experimentation, which successfully developed into a full time engagement and a busy architectural practice dedicated to residential projects in London and the South East.

Christoph was previously director at Chetwoods Architects and has worked on and run projects as different as the famous Butterfly House –an extravagant and beautiful private house in the Surrey countryside and big urban housing developments based on eco-friendly building principles like the Brighton, New England Quarter, City Point Development. His skills range from conceptual design through to a grounded knowledge of technical constraints and material requirements which he enjoys to test and challenge.
In opposition to most of his colleagues he never abandoned designing, developing and drawing the schemes himself in 2D and 3D in favour of purely managing big projects. He started his career in Cologne, Germany working for the locally well-known architecture office of Gottfried Boehm in 1995.

He worked on design competitions at KSP before joining the Chetwoods office for more than 10 years.
Esther was senior architect at Alsop Architects for 8 years and worked on some of Will Alsop’s most prestigious projects at the time, as for example OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design) in Toronto, Goldsmith College, London, the futuristic but un-built Fourth Grace for Liverpool and various school projects and urban design competitions.
The collaboration with her partner Christoph Recktenwald started while studying in Germany and Italy at the Università Federico II in Naples.

Both her final degrees, the Diploma in Architecture (Dipl.Ing (Arch) from the University in Aachen, Germany and her Master in Arts (MA (AA) from the Architectural Association were completed with distinction.

Christoph and Esther are both registered architects in the UK and previously in Germany and Recort Architects Limited is a RIBA chartered practice.
